There’s not much to tell really, hands are valued by traditional poker rules and the bets paid out as per the table.   The odds paid depend on the bet you place, which can be from one to five coins.  There is only one slight modification to standard Poker rules in that Deuces are wild.

To play you just bet from one to five coins and then press Deal.    Your hand is dealt and you then have the chance to hold selected cards and change the others.   In this version your hand is ranked automatically and you’re paid according to the odds and your initial stake.

Double Up Chance

One feature of Deuces Wild Video Poker, is the double  feature.  If you win you get the chance to Double your winnings by trying to draw a higher card than the dealer.

Why is Caribbean Stud Poker so popular?

Well the game certainly has the possibility of very big pay offs and it’s very easy to understand.  But from a gambling perspective it’s not really for me – the standard game has a pretty high house edge somewhat over 5% which is about the same as playing roulette on an American wheel!  You can reduce the edge slightly by playing certain strategies but it’s still not the best game to maximise your chances of winning.  However sometimes it’s just about playing the game and Caribbean Stud poker is certainly fun.

The Basics

Firstly all players must make the mandatory Ante bet on the table. Five cards are dealt to each player and one card is revealed from the Bankers hand. If you’re in a real casino you should wait until the dealer pushes your cards towards you before picking them up. Then you must evaluate your hand and decide if it’s worth gambling against the dealers. The rankings are standard poker values ranging from High Card value up to a Royal flush.

After Evaluation

• Fold – forfeit your cards and your Ante. In a casino you would place your cards face down and push them towards the dealer who will remove them from the game.
• Play on – Place an additional bet of exactly double the Ante. So if you played a $10 Ante then you would need to place a $20 bet to continue.

After all players have made their decisions, the dealer will turn over the remaining four cards on their hands. The dealer will then make the highest ranking poker hand available using their hand. To stay in the game the dealer has to ‘qualify’ which means that the hand must have at least a value of Ace/King to continue.

Caribbean Stud Poker Outcomes

• If the dealer qualifies – then all hands are compared with the dealer. If the players hand wins then the player wins on both Ante and the Raise bet. If the players hand is lower than the dealer then the player loses the Ante and the Bet.
• If the dealer doesn’t qualify – all players still in the game will win. But the payout is only based on the initial Ante not the Bet.

Winning Ante bets are paid at evens money.  The Bet wager is paid at escalating odds depending on the hand (but only if the dealer qualifies).  The odds range from evens to a pair up to 100-1 for a Royal flush.

The Progressive Jackpot

You’ll see in the game above an extra side bet called the progressive bet.  This gives you a chance to win the jackpot total at the top of the screen.  In a casino it will take the form of a drop slot with a red light next to it.  You activate this bet by placing a small bet (usually a $1) and it gives you a chance to win either all the amount or a percentage depending on your hand – Royal Flush would pay 100% of the jackpot for example.

Basic Caribbean Stud Poker Strategy 

It’s great fun to play but the house edge makes it a bad choice for serious gamblers.  However you should always play the Basic strategy for Caribbean Stud to minimize the house advantage.

• Always Fold if you Hold no Ranking Hand
• Always Place Bet if you Hold Pair or Better
• If you Hold Ace/King – Place Bet if one of your other cards matches or beats the dealers upturned card.

There are more advanced strategies but as I mentioned if you playing too seriously you shouldn’t be playing this game.  The existence of the Progressive Jackpot though does give an outside chance of a very big win if Lady Luck is smiling at you.  It’s a fun game though and despite my reservations about the odds I always play a few hands of Caribbean Stud Poker when I come across it.  Enjoy ………

Well I reckon they probably filmed it a few times and with only five bets he was pretty sure to get one winning streak like that! But who knows that’s just me being cynical, mainly because if he could do it for real don’t think he’d need to do magic tricks……

It’s of course always been rather confused the US position on gambling online, perhaps best illustrated that billions are actually already wagered illegally by US citizens .  The choices are limited though and if a US citizen visits any of the major internet betting sites they’ll be politely declined based on their location.   Of course one of the big problems is that all of the money that is actually wagered online by US citizens simply flows out of the country to European and Asian based sites mostly.

But this could be about to change in a development that may revolutionize the online gambling market.  The US Justice Department was asked by New York and Illinois to clarify the rules for selling lottery tickets online.  They wanted to be able to sell these tickets over the internet, however the response went much, much further.  They stipulated that there was actually only one thing illegal under federal law and that was Sports betting across State and federal lines.   Which ultimately means that the position has reversed from all online gambling is illegal to pretty much all gambling is legal online.

There is of course some concern – ruling what is not legal is still not really that clear.  Bigger firms will probably be unwilling to invest greatly until there is something a little more clearer.  In fact the American Gaming association stated -

validates the urgent need for federal legislation to curb what will now be a proliferation of domestic and foreign, unlicensed and unregulated gaming websites without consistent regulatory standards and safeguards against fraud, underage gambling and money laundering.

The remaining uncertainty probably won’t stop  the smaller operators and experts predict that the online poker industry is probably going to be the first to benefit.   Simply because it is more a game of skill than chance and is likely going to be safer until clarification is made from a federal level.

If this clarification is received expect to see a flurry of activity in the sector.

Hopefully this will lead to a much better experience for  all gamblers and the eradication of the many sites that seek to operate in the shady confusion of the previous federal stance on gambling across the web.

Another positive note is that of development of the market.  With this potential unleashed, expect there to be significant investment in new technology and ways of gambling – I’m sure there’s going to be some wonderful applications available to smart phone and tablet users .

There are already lots of applications available in Europe for placing a bet on a smart phone and I would expect that the US entering the market things will change rapidly.

• Internet gamblers should not be able to file for personal bankruptcy.

It’s rather unclear how  some of those regulations would be implemented however.

The Vegas version of Three Card Rummy is played with just two players, the dealer and the player using a single 52 card deck. Both the player and the Dealer is dealt three cards. The players cards are placed faced up and the dealers are left facing down.

The Aim is simply to get less points than the dealer.

The Ante Bet

When an ante Bet has been placed, the player is dealt three cards facing up and the dealer is dealt three down facing cards. At this point the player must make a decision, if the player thinks that they cannot beat the dealer they can simply fold and forfeit the Ante bet.

If the player believes they can win then they MUST raise with a bet equal to the Ante amount.  As soon as the raise has been applied then the Dealer’s cards will be turned over.   The hand must first be assessed to see if it qualifies, for this the hand must contain 20 points or less.  Then the Dealer’s hand is compared to the Player’s hand – the winner will be the hand which has  the lowest total.

There’s more ways to maximise your winnings, using the bonus bet.  It’s basically won if the Player’s hand contains a total of 12 point or less.  This bet is completely independent of the Dealer’s hand, it is simply assessed on the points total of the hand that is dealt.  If you bet on the Ante and fold, you will also lose your Bonus bet – the payouts are as below.

First of all let me first say that in general I don’t believe in roulette systems, if you look at the mathematics behind most of them then they simply don’t add up. I’ve lost count of the number of systems I’ve worked through to discover that they in fact do absolutely nothing to increase your chances of winning. In fact on a purely mathematical basis I would tend to agree with the Wizard of Odds who states that all betting systems are worthless.

But back to Martingale, the concept is quite simple and fairly logical. You place a bet on an even money return like red/black or odd/even, if it wins you pocket the cash but if you lose then you double your next stake. You keep doing this until you win, therefore in theory guaranteeing a small win on every sequence you play. The problem is the real world and these important points -

Betting Limits – All Casinos place a limit on a single bet, if your required amount in martingale goes above this, then you will lose.

Infinite Bankroll Required – The amounts required can quickly get very large if you get a streak of bad luck. You need the cash to place the large bets needed otherwise you lose.

The Zero (or zeros on an American wheel) mean that it’s not a true 50/50 bet

These two facts make the Martingale a very dangerous system to play, for instance just imagine a small losing streak. The first spin you bet $5 then $10, $20, $40, $80, $160, $320 and then $640. Streaks like this are surprisingly common if you spend any amount of time watching a roulette game.  So remember if you do play Martingale then start low and you need to play at a European roulette wheel with one zero and which has a high stake limit.  Oh and don’t forget the large bank roll of course.

But if you want to play around with the possibilities of  the Martingale system then try this simulator.  It allows you to input your stake, the length you want to play, your bank roll and then generates a sample session. You’ll probably notice that on long sessions you will almost certainly lose inevitably hitting one of those streaks that blow your bankroll – the simulator doesn’t count maximum stakes. You can alter the house edge by selecting the different roulette wheel.

If you cut the number of spins down to 25 or 50 you’ll see what usually happens with martingale, that you’ll generally win a series of small amounts but these will be interrupted by some huge losses. European online gambling legislation changes have been adopted by several more EU countries. In response to a European Commission (EC) Igaming Green Paper released in March, 2011, and a public comment period that closed in July, the European Parliament and European Economic and Social Committee (EESC) convened in early September to consider the Green Paper and citizen comments.

They concluded that the present state of online gambling is not acceptable and that legislation outlining minimum standards and regulations are required EU-wide.

Within the EU membership there is a disparity of approaches to online gambling, ranging from banning the function altogether to allowing liberal markets. This disparity is creating a headache for the European Court of Justice.

Countries are uncertain exactly how Article 49 of the EU Treaty applies to online gambling legislation, thereby resulting in twenty-seven separate systems and continual infringement of the law.

The solution appears to be in establishing a minimum operating requirement that would regulate online gambling across the entire EU. Ideally, the regulations would apply EU-wide and at the minimum would protect consumers while allowing member states to proceed as far as they so desire.

The deadline for the European Parliament and EESC response to the Green Paper is October, 2011, at which time the EC can propose legislation to police online gambling EC-wide, which will not be considered before 2012.

The Green Paper highlighted the need for European online gambling legislation changes. For instance,

Most of these countries claim they banned or restricted online gambling in order to protect consumers. Nonetheless, online gambling is a real threat to the money that governments collect from local betting monopolies.

Greece currently finds itself in dire economic circumstances with the IMF requiring the nearly defunct country adopt certain measures to generate revenue. It was actually quite simple for them to use their their knowledge to ensure that the machine printed out a winning ticket whatever the result of the bet placed. In fact the only reason they were caught was a combination of carelessness and greed. A cashier noticed that a winning ticket contained an impossible payout of 600, the wager had been a 10 pound bet at odds of 35-1 !! Officials where then able to trace back a string of suspicious wins back to the two individuals who were both employed as problems analysts by the casino group.

Both pleaded guilty to theft under the 1968 Theft act. The court sentenced them to serve 200 hours of community service in addition to the suspended sentences. They were also ordered to pay back approximately 16000 pounds each to their ex employers.

These men not only used their intimate knowledge of two complex systems to break the law and make these fraudulent claims, they also breached the trust of their employers.

The convictions are surprisingly, probably the first where individuals have been caught manipulating the extensive computer systems that run the UKs thriving gaming industry.   The use of technology to enhance our gaming experiences obviously brings risks of games being manipulated.

There are many instance of ‘Poker bots’ being used to play online poker games for cash and the manipulation of online roulette games is obviously very easily achieved by quick change of code in a Random number generator for instance!  My distrust of these computer simulated wheels only grows when I read stories like this,  although to be fair even live roulette could easily be faked – I’d like to see the Dublin Bet live video stream cut to the clock in the casino occasionally, although to be honest when I’ve visited the Fitzwilliam Street casino I don’t actually remember ever seeing one!
