Learn the Rules of Roulette

The game of Roulette originated in France in 17th century. It has evolved to be a very popular gambling game. The rules of roulette are not very complicated. However, in addition to the rules the player has to understand the risks involved with the placements.   Without these, you’re essentially playing blind but even a basic understanding of the various odds and payouts will dramatically improve your chances of success.

Roulette Bets

Usually in one roulette table there are maximum 8 players who play against the House. The person who plays for the house is called dealer or croupier. The dealer turns the roulette wheels and deal with the bet money. In European style of roulette, there are 37 slots in the wheel whereas in USA, the wheel has 38 slots. Unlike the European version, there are two zeros in USA style wheels.

Every player needs to buy chips to play the game. Everyone has a different color on his chip so that the players don’t confuse the chips with one another. The winner changes the color chips for money after the game finishes. Each chip comes with monetary values printed on it.

Rules of Roulette Bets

At the start of the game, the player places his/her bet on the numbers. A player can bet on numbers and nature or any characteristic of the number. When all the players place their bets the dealer places the ball on the wheel. Before dropping the ball in the slots, the dealer announces ‘no more bets’ which confirms the closing of any further placement of bets. Then the ball spins around and lands on a slot with a number and the player whose bet has similarity with the characteristics of that number wins money according to the payout of his/her bet. After that, the dealer clears the losing bets and pays the winners. Then the next spin starts like this again. There are several types of bets and each bet has different payouts.

It’s difficult to say which is the best bet to play in roulette, simply because the rules and odds do vary slightly from casino to casino.

A bet on one number only, called a straight-up bet, pays 35 to 1. You collect 36. With no House advantage you should collect 37.

A two-number bet, called split bet, pays 17 to 1.

A three-number bet, called street bet, pays 11 to 1.

A four-number bet, called corner bet, pays 8 to 1.

A six-number bet, pays 5 to 1.

A bet on the outside dozen or column, pays 2 to 1.

A bet on the outside even money bets, pays 1 to 1. Black/Red, High/Low, Even/Odd are even money bets.

The house advantage is the advantage the Casino has over the players. On European roulette tables the advantage in 2.7% whereas it is 5.26% on American roulette tables. The winners pay the casino chips equivalent to this advantage.

Other than this general rules there are a few special rules of roulette. When the player places an even money bet and the ball lands on zero, in some casinos the player can take back half of the bet or go for another spin with that bet. This rule is called the En Prison rule. La Partage rule is another rule which is quite similar with En Prison rule. The only difference is that the player does not have the option of going for another spin.

The Rules of Roulette are quite easy to understand and you can actually play online roulette quite easily.  So before trying your luck in roulette get yourself familiar with the rules.
